Applications

The ultimate choice of yeast extracts depends on the microorganism or cell, process, product etc. Ohly works close with the customer with the aim to fulfil the customer expectations and needs. We also offer tailor-made new yeast extracts and provide liquid, viscous or dry extracts depending on customer requests. For a customised recommendation of a suitable yeast extract, please contact us.

Biomass production

The use of active microorganisms in profitable large-scale fermentation is rapidly growing due to increasing knowledge in their functionality and metabolism. For bulk fermentations, yeast
extract is an essential nutrient supplement that will enhance fermentation yield and performance. Ohly offers a unique range of yeast extracts originating from baker’s, torula and brewer’s yeasts,
which can fulfil the complex nutrient requirements of the microorganism.

The value of active cells depends on the organism’s stability and viability. Ohly yeast extracts are developed to not only create optimal growth conditions during fermentation, but also to supply
support through downstream processing and storage (liquid, dry or immobilized).

An increasing demand for non-animal and non-GMO peptones has presented a problem to biomass manufacturers. At Ohly we have both the products and the experience to replace them.

  • Examples of biomass production
  • Starter cultures for fermented food from dairy, meat and vegetable
  • Probiotics which are added to food
  • Biologically active bacteria and fungi for example in industrial and agricultural use
  • Cultivation of mushrooms etc.

Bioactive molecules and chemicals

Microorganisms have the ability to produce complex bioactive molecules as well as chemicals. Biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies are continually learning to make use of both natural and recombinant metabolic pathways to produce these compounds rather than using traditional chemical synthesis. The benefit is being observed in increased product quality and decreased production cost as well as an environmental friendly production.

Ohly yeast extracts supply the cells with essential components such as vitamins, trace elements, growth factors, amino acids and peptides in a balanced composition, which improves the growth and the product synthesis.

Depending on the location of the product in the medium (extracellular or intracellular), Ohly offers filtered yeast extracts, which can simplify downstream processing and reduce production cost.
High purity Ohly yeast extracts are also well suited for GMP manufacture and other sensitive production processes.
