Ohly opens new spray drying tower in Hamburg
Ohly is making significant investments to expand and further automate its Hamburg plant, including the construction of a new spray drying tower. The company is pleased to announce that this tower is now operational, and the first dried yeast specialties are being shipped to customers. With this investment in state-of-the-art facilities, Ohly and Associated British Foods reaffirm their long-standing commitment and progress towards a sustainable future, after 190 years at their base in Hamburg.
Investing in the future
Ohly has developed specialised expertise in spray-drying yeast over many decades. Now, with one of the most modern spray drying facilities in Europe and a large team of technical experts, they are leveraging this wealth of experience to ensure a reliable and secure supply chain for their customers.
Specifically designed for spray drying yeast specialties, the new tower will continue to deliver the same consistent high-quality products that Ohly is known for.
"The launch of our new spray drying tower in Hamburg marks a significant milestone in Ohly's 190-year history. This investment not only expands our production capabilities but also reinforces our commitment to high-quality products and supply reliability while continuing to improve our environmental performance," says Dr Ralf Fink, CEO.

Designed to support safety and decarbonisation
The spray drying and packaging processes taking place in the new tower are designed to be almost entirely automated, ensuring the highest standards of work and product safety.
“The design of the new spray drying tower prioritises product quality, consistency and safety. The automated process not only ensures consistently high product standards but also enhances ergonomics and reduces physical strain on our employees," explains Michael Schwerdt, Site Operations Manager at Ohly, Hamburg.
The new spray drying tower will support Ohly’s decarbonisation journey with a modern heat recovery system for better thermal management. Moreover, increased spray-drying capacity in-house will reduce the need to transport yeast to external partners for spray drying.
Ohly is confident that these significant investments in expanding and automating its facilities will further strengthen strategic partnerships with customers.
